OK much to do and not too much time for writery, little skittles on the go. The star of this week's show, somewhat surprisingly, is Paul Weller. As far as his solo career goes, for my money anyways, it's no surprise that there's some goodness (and quality remixes) on his latest, it's just the number of crackers and the bold musical steps he's taken that has pleasantly shocked me. Hanyways I'm not putting anything of his up because DMCA notices are so passe, so instead have a nibble on this little taste-ette from Vybz Kartel in praise of the footwear favourite, Clarks. Apparently this song and it's predecessor have caused the price of Clarks to rise in JA, much to the chagrin of well shod yard folk whose dollars nah run.
Hanyways when Vybz is on he is ON, and this is one of them.. especially over this riotous rhythm from Russian and Head Concussion crew. No philosophizing needed, strictly winery and whistle blowing.

CLARKS AGAIN - VYBZ KARTEL

Also definitely worth a sniff, and undoubtedly even a snoot is that chap Scratch 22's rerub of Electric Wire Hustle's 'Again'. There's a 100 DLs on soundcloud with this and I don't reckon they're going to hang about too long (after that there's a buy link too so NO EXCUSERATION!)
Look out for more major news about his Scratchlyness here and roundabout soon, but in the meantime don't sleep on this gem, it has discipline and restraint and throws out a clear warning sign (if any were needed) to keep a beady eye on this geezer.. double plus.

(if the embedded player is not playing pop, follow the link in the playlist or head straight to the EWH site, aaaite)
I'm heading off to enjoy and appreciate something magnificent that I have waited many years for... let you in on what that is next week.

Here for a brief whiffy week is a taster from the insiduous Fox Trot Mannersims from Brooklyn femme-C and producer Pursuit Grooves. The very fact that it has been picked up by DJ Pinch for a thoroughly mould breaking release on his Tectonic label should be a clue that it's a bit special, and it is. Initially it was the Coco Solid-esque vibes of Start Something that caught my ear, and in doing a little research I discovered that PG also attended the Barcelona RBMA, as did our champeen Mz Coco. Curious. In the space of a week or so the entire EP has latched its tasty tentacles onto my musical mainframe, and it really is a breath of fresh air amongst a seemingly endless slew of wonky nouveau trip-hopisms. Check this sultry wee beastie out at a frankly unsatisfactory rate of 192, and then repair yourself to your nearest discery or pusher of bytes and invest in the full EP, ypu'll be thanking me (or you have cloth ears).

(B)Eat Your Vegetables & somethings for the weekend sir?!

A quick slupdate from stinkinc central on some stuff that matters.
Fer localites don't forget we'll be stirring up that musky muzak and wafting the woofers tonight at Ginger Minx for Aromatherapy from 8.30pm or thereabouts, t'would be delightful to see you.Meanwhile read on for this weekends actioneration which is non-olfactory in its' constitution but promises to reek to the rafters... but first check this.

Our long time good mucker and foley don Tim Prebble (aka Short Fuse, R&D, Suizen etc) is on a bit of a roll of late. First there was the introduction of his Dub 45/Suizen project which we have rahed about previously, and comes with the heftiest of recommendations. Now he has got all up in his greens and kicked off an online sound library malarkey under the hissandaroar banner. Do have a gander at the tres amusant and awfully clever video Tim has put together below, and check out the site (linked above) which has the full guts, and where you can even get a free sample of the terrible things he has put greengrocery goods through for the sake of a good sound. Vegetarians may find this offensive.... well at least I hope so.

Moving right along there's a couple of very tasty gigs on Saturday that rank a renk.
From early out (6ish apparently) the Homebrew chaps are having a spot of fundraising action having got the bozak from NZOA. Well we've all been there (or at least I have..) and I like the approach that they've taken with these vids and whatnot. Check one of 'em below and a whole heap more on the Homebrew site, there's also a David Farrier spoof which is most amusing that he (Farrier that is) will be featuring in Nightline tonight. Points and prizes all round, would be lovely to see all the jaded journalists, haters and liberal bedwetters who got their jollies taking shots at MTC over the Dirty Sesh clip a couple of weeks ago, using their poisonous pens and toxic typewriters to applaud and support something like this.... but I'm not holding my breath, maybe they only notice hip hop when they can stick the boot in.
Hanyways, don't start me on that. Vid and flyer below see you there..... and read on for more Saturday night stupendosity.

Since the Homebrew do is an early starter, it should leave the intrepid unraveller plenty of time to head up to KFM where than man Mark Pritchard will no doubt be unleashing all sorts of bowel vacationary sub-bass type business. His Harmonic 313 album was one of last year's best, and he's a man who always comes correct behind the decks with his own productions, and future slices of other folks that most discerning record spinning types would give their right arm for. It's a verifiable steal at only $15 and word is that he'll be spinning from around 1am though the support line-up should get some ..... er support, and is not to be sniffed at. Flyer below, as previously mentioned a warm-up at the Minx tonight is strongly recommended for a smooth transition into what should be a delightfully messy weekend.

Up for your perusal and adoption this week is a pearler that I've been itching to get my hands on for a Sandringham minute (well if New York can have a minute, why can't we?). It's that man Pilooski, the French, in fact let's broaden that and say European... Rey de Edits. This time around he's taking his trusty stereophonic scalpel to a personal favourite of mine, 'Angie La La (Ay Ay Ay)' by Nora Dean. Originally issued on Treasure Isle in 1969 as the b-side to U Roy's staggering 'Tom Drunk', you simply have to wonder what Nora (and everyone else) was on that day. Actually talking of Treasure Isle I had a well interesting chat and interview with Duke Reid's nephew, Errol Brown last week. You might expect a bit of attitude from a feller who has engineered and mixed stuff like Treasure Isle In Dub and albums from Culture, Prince Fari etc etc and some bloke called Bob Marley and progeny, but he was ultra delightful and had a few good yarns to spin. He was over here producing House Of Shem's album, and that was the connection for the interview so it will be appearing in print later this year, after that we'll have some directors cut, unexpurgated business up here. Naturally I plugged him on the activities of his son Shane who runs the excellent Jukeboxx label and manages Busy Signal, amongst others.

But I digress. Pilooski has dealt to 'Angie La La' proper, spinning it out into a right old odyssey and since this is from a sold out vinyl pressing (with no legit downloads I've been able to find) and the last record in the 'Rvng Of The Nrds' series, I've wanged up the 320. For good measure there's also Norma's tripped out Treasure Isle original below but thats a middling manky 192kbps artefact because you can and should buy it on the 'Queens Of Jamaica - The Ladies Who Made Reggae' album on Jah Slams which is easily the match of many more celebrated comps on fancier labels. Seriously... search it out and you will not be disappointed.

7" repress of Nora Dean original at Phonica
There's a couple of copies at Conch but 'Rvng Of The Nrds Vol 10' is pretty much sold out most places, so snooze and lose!
Below- Pilooski looks like a man who can't wait for Movember, how French. Look out for his Discodiene album which is imminent and includes Jarvis Cocker on the guest list.

Can't Take No More - Brinsley Forde & Blackout JA (Maroon)

A plethora of pertinently perky, powerful plays this week with the new comp from Jahtari ('Jahtarian Dubbers Volume 2')running particularly hard with their most widescreen and promising selection yet. Could easily have played a bunch more from that, but the competition was fearsome, and it's always good to have some ready-cut gems for next weeks dropathon. Also on the collection tip and similarly crucial is Keb Darge & Paul Weller's 'Lost And Found...' on BBE, the diminutive jock jockey (of the discs not the steeds) comes ultra correct with a vigorous bluesy R&B set while Weller is predictably on point with a soulful slew of Modfather morsels. I can vouch for it's complete Sundayness having roadtested on this Easter Sunday and it's ensuing Sunday-esque Monday and I'm pretty sure this is required rhythmic reading for any day of the week.. investigation (across the nation, and at the station without hesitation) is strongly suggested.
There's also Brinsley Forde's, Curtis Lynch Jnr generated revisiting of the 'Babylon' classic 'Can't Take No More Of That' which is crisp, but only managed to slide in as last track, Stones Throw's 'Fuzzy Bananas' Braz-psych set, Soundway's latest Nigerian excursions and freshness from the mighty Cabeza net label. And so much more, I know I say it ever week but there really was a trailerload this week, and the whole first set (especially the first three tunes) made me feel like rewinding and starting it all again. The eagle eyed amongst you may notice more links in place of labels on the playlist, we'll see how we go with that, it's time consuming but if it's useful or appreciated please let me know, and I'll continue. Some weeks the empty spaces after the title and artist statutories were becoming overwhelming, so we'll see how this runs.
This week the focus is on the inscrutable Doma Tornados, Barcelona's blistering beat bandito who seems to grow and surprise with every release. His latest EP 'Toba Rey' is a total mindblower conceptually, musically and lyrically.
The vocal from the great Argentinian folk protest singer Mercedes Sosa, who passed last year, is one of those performances that you don't need to understand the actual words to fully get the feeling. 'Antiguos dueños de las flechas' means 'The Ancient Owners Of The Arrows' and tells of the persecution of the Toba people. Rather than me regurgitating charmlessly, check the link for a depressingly familiar story of oppression, colonization, environmental fuckery and economic strangulation. You can hear it all, translation required or not, in the song and the video of a live version of the original below, but the way Tanox has created a new song around it is astonishing.
Sneakily he flipped the instrumental out to his mailing list a week or two ago, it's a standalone pearler, and it might have easily been overlooked when cosied up to two versions with the riveting, haunting vocal. From the first chance to run it out and on the radio I had people asking me 'what is this?', 'The Owner Of The Skunk' (Antiguos dueños de las skunk) would be my reply, and I'd get 'that' look before a brief explanation and espousal of the wonders to be found in the Doma Tornadosphere (who has many priceless tracks available for free pon them internets for those with a touch of search nous).
Alongside the archetypal DT percussive panorama there are guitar and bass swells that (and I hesitate to say this) carry a genuine 80's flavour, not in the usually touted cliche way, more like something that could have been a b-side on Rough Trade in 1982 or Keith Levene and Jah Wobble might have cooked up on their mellowest of mellow days. Oh and his distinctive favoured guitar sound always reminds me of that Fleetwood Mac tune that was the theme tune for the F1 in the UK for like forever, and I'm not mad at that neither. It's one of those 'it shouldn't make sense but it completely does' tracks ... and that's just the instrumental. I was sold, home and hosed, before I even knew the point, the focus and the key to the whole thing.
It's downloadable for free from Hipi Duki Muzik and while you're there, get familiar. The Asaduki comp last year was a total stunner and trust me, it hasn't got old.

ANTIGUOS DUEÑOS DE LAS FLECHAS
Indio toba
Sombra errante de la selva
Pobre toba reducido
Dueño antiguo de las flechas
Indio toba
Ya se han ido tus caciques,
Tus hermanos chirihuanos,
Abipones, mocovies . . .
Sombra de kokta y noueto
Viejos brujos de los montes
No abandonen a sus hijos
Gente buena, gente pobre . . .
Indio toba,
El guazuncho y las corzuelas,
La nobleza del quebracho
Todo es tuyo y las estrellas.
Indio toba ya viniendo de la cangaye
Quitilipi, aviaterai, caguazu, charadai,
Guaicuru, tapenaga, pirane, samuhu,
Matara, guacara, pinalta,
Matara, guacara, pinalta . . .
Indio toba no llorando aquel tiempo feliz
Pilcomayos y bermejos llorando por mi
Campamento de mi raza la america es
De mi raza de yaguarete
Es la america, es . . .
Toba dueño como antes del bagre y la miel
Cazador de las charatas, la onza, el tatu
Toba rey de yararas, guazupu y aguaras
El gualamba ya es mio otra vez
Otra vez, otra vez . . .
