Well ahoy, a touch ragged around the edges this evening but... hey who's counting? As ever a veritably shameful surplus of excess essential tunage, going down so many avenues that stopping the show turning into one huge genre battle required some restraint... you gets that, but not much.

Sitting in the stench seat this week is the unlikely named Franz Job who isn't yet another product of Germany's reggae industry, but actually a dynamite force from TnT (or Trini & Tobago if you prefer, Tobago to be exact). He has picked up the nickname 'The Eclectic Country Boy' which I particularly like as it so 'un-current dancehall', and has been mentored by the great Gladdy Wax, a chief amongst men. So good credentials,a cracking moniker and ...what a tune!!!

This is by far the pick of the bunch for me on the Gorilla riddim from Curtis Lynch Jnr's Necessary Mayhem camp. There's also some alright puff-proclaiming tackle from the usual suspects, and a tune where Tarrus Riley just seems to give up in order to unleash his inner 'la la's' (phwert) but nothing comes close to Franz's, cut which recalls a touch of Courtney Melody and the like, and a time when dancehall was well ..just less aggro.
Enjoy the tune in it's lo-fi, up for a week fashion, and then please do head off to the Necessary Mayhem webstore and do the right thing by buying a copy...please.

Truth be told a willfully and negligently under-prepared Stinky Grooves tonight, however as of last night t'was all looking on schedule. Today was the best kind of write-off from a SG p.o.v., with pressing stuff that should bear fine fruits later in the year... more on that in time.
Talking of more, there were more sneaky treats from Scratch 22's 'Distance From View' tonight, there's a certain part of a Round Trip Mars record that doesn't come alive until it's been run through the b studio a few weeks in advance of release (release you say? Yes April 18th 'Distanc e From View' it's a screaming sorcher) and tonight's cuts were sounding ridonkulous. Plenty more besides - the new Tapes is a Dolby free analogue blinder, Curtis Lynch Jnr's Gorilla rhythm is deadly on the heavy grip tip, the nerdulatory dream team of Burial, Four Tet and Thom Yorke really do deliver on that new 12"... I could go on... I usually do.
However this week I'd like to draw your attention to a beat you can buy that will help make someone's world a better place. Chuck Wild from the excellent Mixtape Riot blog decided to do something about the insane fuckery that is going down in Japan and whipped up a track (with liberal lashings of koto) to sell, donating all proceeds to the Red Cross work in Japan. I'm decidedly down with that plan and had no qualms about flinging some sponds his way for the track (which is tight anyways)... and I'd humbly ask you to please do the same.

Yet another week where a radio show seems like an indulgence and frippery when there is so much immensely bad bad shit going on, but I guess the world keeps on kind of turning.
Tonight was a little bit congested on the musical tiplet. I had more than enough for several shows even before I remembered a weighty wishlist at Juno Download, and before you know it there's nearly a gigs worth of hooha coming down the pipe including albums from Discodeine, Earl Sixteen, Fruko & Joe Arroyo… plus EPs' from Black Chow (on Jahtari), Alpha Steppa featuring his familial racket makers Alpha & Omega and tracks from Eero Johannes and who knows what else… A bumper crop then!

Add that to the scorcher of a new album from moody maestro The Oscillation, a cracking new Colombian comp ('Cartagena') on Soundway, A Hawk And A Hacksaw's excess evocative 'Cervantine' album and plenty more - and you have a rhythm roadblock. Will be doing some more exorcising of that sonic surplus on Thursday when Armatherapy resumes at the Ginger Minx (8.30-11.30 and free popkids) after a 2 week lay off.

For your temporary delectation tonight it had to be something from the eponymous album by Pentile & Pilooski a.k.a. Discodeine. I have enjoyed bits and pieces that have emerged under this name in the past, but hearing tracks randomly almost put me off the full record. Praises be for finally enough time to check it out this arvo (and subsequently shell out for it), and realise what I've been missing out on. Don't be an ass like me, check it for yourshelf at the links below. By way of introduction do investigate the lo-qual mp3 below which will be up for one week only…but by then you'll have bought the record …right?!!

Buy the Discodeine album, it's awful good but don't expect to be bowled over on first listen - is growery!

T'was messy beginnings this evening which are quite a likelihood under current conditions but after that kick off into touch it felt like plain cruising until the very end when things went skewiff again...c'est la vie!
Coupla gems for you this eve. First up a Brian Eno track from 'Making Spaces' a CD on Opal that was released last year BUT is only available from places where his installations are housed. So , a tricky one to track down but for my money this album punches out his lauded Warp album by some margin (and the artwork is off the planet).

Closer to 'ome, Scratch 22's debut album 'Distance From View' is purty much home and hosed and ready for Round Trip Mars release on April 18th. We snuck out a few tracks out tonight and there will be many more before it's officially unleashed (check Mr 22's own Base FM show 'Lion For Real', Fridays at 12 for head expanding bands and no doubt more of his upcoming missive).
Certainly not ready to let off any of the bombs His Scratchness has been carefully cultivating for that project yet, but being a generouso fellow he's been twiddling them knobs, dabbling with the dials and coming up with roses...Just like the bouquet of badness below.
It's yet another red herring as far as any clues about the album's contents go but it's a fiery jacques nonetheless and it's free from his soundcloud, check eeeeeeeeeeeet.

Has been a good long while since we've had any Vybz up here and now seems like a good time to rectify that. Remarking on the lyrical inconsistencies of Jamaican artists is no new topic, most seem able to flit between preacher and certified badman in all of the improper arts, at the drop of a hat. However Vybz really works the span with the ability to wallow sub-gutter, sewer style and fashion when he deems it prudent or to be the 'butter wouldn't melt in his mouth' gent when so inclined.
This'un is somewhere in the middle, it's considerably tougher than all of the other averagely voiced tracks on the Cruising Altitude rhythm... but it's hardly rough. Hanyways me likes it (the I-Wayne cut is the other one worth a listen in my rumble opinion), and I particularly dig the 'In Gaza' female sample - so many of Vybz' tracks have extra little hooks or foolish palaver that I suspect he must suggest them himself, whatever... it works.
Big tune for the puffers, no less necessary audio for the abstainers, get to it...woh!
I'll be spinning some tunes early and late at Aloe Blacc's AK return tomorrow night, I didn't check the first show as we were ensconced in wonderful (s)Mellbourne but apparently the blind could see, the deaf were on the i-pod and the dumb were neither dumbfounded nor dumbstruck .. ie, peoples said he was good. I interviewed him last year, just as 'I Need A Dollar' was blowing up and aside from being very switched on, he was fercoiously accommodating and genuinely keen to make the interview happen despite trying travel situations and a rammed schedule.. that's far too rare these days and I'm hoping he follows through pon stage.
Also doing Aromatherapy as-per on Thursday, 8.30 kick orf, no retreat - no surrender!

Ay, ay, ay it's been a while, 3 weeks to be exact and tonight was fitting to burst. Not sure how it was out there in radio/t'internet land but up in the bfm crows nest that felt splendiferous to say the very least. Surprisingly so given the circumstances.
Lots to tell and we'll get to that at some point, suffice to say that loafing, getting to play a set alongside Cumbia Cosmonauts, checking Primal Scream in a proper venue with a killer encore, art noodling.. and all the rest was well worth it.

Sincerest apologies for the lack of show this week. Caught a well poky bit of food poisoning and wasnt able to do much apart from groan and cry like a little girl... no one needs to be subjected to that!

Another late start but fortunately enough time to jampack a veritable treasure trove of goodness into the SG cannon this week. Going to leave you with a tune from jock femme-C Soom T this week as her album alongside digital revivalist Disrupt has some gorgeous moments. The weed focus that runs through most every single tune, the album title (Ode 2 A Carrot ...... Camberwell, one presumes?!) and everything else ..does run out of wheels eventually, but there's a charm throughout that counters any red-eyed overload.
Particularly love this spoken track 'Wee Rant' and so it's up for a week, low qual and please please please support the excellent folk at Jahtari by flinging your pounds, shillings and pence (dollars too maybe) at them.
May well be sliding a Soom T tune in somewhere at what looks like a legendary dance on Saturday at Rakinos...One Foundation. Huuuuuuuuge line-up, should be socrcherating and then some, our man Willi The Kid who has put the whole fandangle together (and props to him for that) reckons I'll be playing around 2ish, maybe a bit earlier.... cannae wait, got some fire in store!
