It's about time for a munty contribution to the weekly (about time for a lot of things, but thats another story) and who better than Light Sound Darkness (LSD geddit) who have returned to raise some serious questions about taste barriers, and generally fry minds and sizzle synapses with Return Of The Sherm.

I was well taken with their first offering alone similar lines Sherm Sticks And Other Nasty Joints ..and Vol 2 could almost be better. Give me a few days on that as I only hauled it into my digi-shopping net last night, but currently..I'm impressulated. This is a breaks classique and with good reason, for me it's all about those fruit-loop vocals..and the rest.

This week, it's a shock, posts in the multiple with scant regard for health and safety. So lets keep the reading light for this'un. Below is a link to the album by the curiously titled Day Of the Woman, it's a right proper messed up record from the scanty scan I managed to give it today…and that's a good thing. Super sleuths will recognize a direct correlation between my interest and the Mexicans With Guns remix which is fire, but there's plenty more. There's a fellow from Yppah and a couple of other folk I should probably knowof, or research…but it's late and I do have a home to go to.

Exponential also have a Mexicans With Guns remix album too, I only found that while writing this.. so sod you lot, I'm off to download it for myself so I can lose it with just about the only wobble merchant who is worthy of a grin rather than a grimace in my humble onion.

JENNIFER HILLS (MEXICANS WITH GUNS RMX) - DAY OF THE WOMAN

As ever Aromatherapy on Thursday, first timers, regulars and the merely curious are more than welcome.... hurrah.

Cans and gig plans

Welllll it never rains, this time it never pours - it's felines and canines business, thoroughly drenchworthy - another post.

We'll make this quick. I have a few rules that make life less complicated, one is that I will only endorse things that I actually choose to use (except paid voice work - when I'm almost anybody's, except for a couple of world raping corporates I have drawn the line at). So, especially when it comes to headphones, which I seem to have spent an inordinate amount of the last couple of decades in...I take that shit serious. I've been dead loyal to my HD25's for a looooong time, ever since the much missed Anthony from Syntec sent a couple of pairs up for us to check out, after a trying time with the cans at bFM, doing Tranquility Bass with Kirk back in the murky 90's. I certainly haven't been in the market for any newun's but my curiosity was piqued when I read on Ivan Smagghe's blog about an upcoming model, developed and designed by DJ's, that looked serious rather than some gimmick. Fast forward a couple of months and I get a call asking if I'd be interested in playing a gig and parlaying my sketchy services for a pair of some new fangled cans. Obviously I needed to check them first, I have enough duff gear and none of it gets better with age - it just takes up space. Sure enough, the very headphones that had made me think ...hmmm would be good to have some for studio and some for playing out... well it was they.

So this Saturday I'm doing the gig postered below (playing 10-11 after the majestic Manuel Bundy, Scratch 22's on from 1 too) and I now have a pair of TMA-1's which so far I've been very happy with. I've yet to test them out in the all important gig scenario but they've done a bit of time on my lugs over the last weekend, and while you wouldn't expect them to reach the bass response and all over aaaaaah-ness of the faithful Sennheisers (which also cost half as much again!) they sound proper. Loads of detail in the tops, very comfortable, they even made a several hour long sampling session not too grim as they sit really well.

So that's what they look like below, and I guess we'll all be on em at the gig! They aren't at the cheap end of the market but thus far I'd say they were fairly priced, and it's your ears...man...it's your frikkin ears, you've got to look after them.

Next week steam mops, the revival of 8-track and have I got a deal for yooooooooooooooo... (apologies for the small poster, phrigging photobouquet)

Lido Pimienta interview pt 2

OK part 2 - good for you. Don't forget that this is shorn of all the quotes used in the Real Groove on Lido article so please check that (at least the words) if you are of NZular disposition. There are some streams at yonder end for the hardy sound traveller, but as ever show your worth and nurse the purse towards some vendification (I'm trying to say B.U.Y.!)

I'd say there's at least a 50/50 chance I'll be playing Caminos again on Stinky Grooves tonight though there is a veritable trailerload of field-fresh crisp vegetables and top ranking, pertinently picked rooty toot ripe fruits, all fighting for a bit of airtime.. what a delightful conundrum. Do you get to actually collaborate in person ever, or is it all done across the internets etc?

So far, the only collaboration in person, aside from the daily work at my home studio with my producer/father of my son Michael Raimey has been with El Hijo de la Cumbia. We met in Mexico while we both were having shows down there and in one morning started working on a song together. It was a very enriching experience, and we were able to express our emotions about the track immediately, which obviously helped the development of the song way faster.

Time ran out at the studio, or otherwise we would have finished it. There are still some changes that need to be done to the track, but we decided we would do it in person so it it keeps the same essence. We don't know when we will actually do it, but there is no rush. We definitely know that the song needs to be finished in person, we don't want it to lose its character, is not worth rushing it. I was also able to sing live in Tijuana with Antonio Jimenez in our band Los Espiritus, it was great to be able to see each other finally. We were able to play the songs live, together in the flesh! It was surreal. Unforgettable indeed. Working online is great, but nothing like doing it in person.

Who is releasing your vinyl and what are your release plans etc moving forward?

The vinyl will be released by a label from Los Angeles California. Ku De Ta/theblankettheory.com They are all about supporting Do It Yourself art and promoting independent artists and raw talent. It is an honor to be a small part of it. For the vinyl release of Color we are including 3 new songs, the album will have a code for the album to be downloaded digitally and as special extra something - To keep the one of a kind vibe going, a handmade illustration by me. Lot’s to be excited about!

How has the Color CD release gone for you?

So far it has been very good, and extremely surprising. I always knew that I had to (When releasing an album)Do or give a little bit extra, give people something they can’t hear online or download-Which, if you really try, you could find all of my songs spread in different websites and compilations. So, what better to do then make one of a kind handmade covers- each time I get an order via my myspace I paint a special album cover each time. At the same time, I never thought I was going to sell more than maybe 10 cds, so, one by one is pretty doable. Of course I have sold more than 10, but I never thought I would be shipping it to people in Australia, Italy, New Zealand or Germany for example. I sing in Spanish! It has been a pleasant surprise and the proof that we all feel the same way about music. It unites us, and makes our world smaller and smaller.

Your music (even from the little I can understand with my pocotito of spanglish) carries a strong message. That seems to be quite rare these days and it comes through even without understanding all the words. Why do you think that there is so little music with a point and a purpose these days?

Because we need a distraction from loneliness and depression. People are eager to hear things that will help them forget about their problems. We want to look at pretty things because the world can be very very ugly. Although it does not justify the terrible music out there. It is all a matter of taste as well-perhaps is not fair of me to say that there is terrible music out there, when maybe what I consider amazing, for others, is complete shit.

About the message, I guess everyone does have a message to deliver, it varies from person to person- people ultimately want t be entertained and we all follow trends so we don't feel excluded, so we can be part of something bigger than us. Most mainstream pop is a distraction from reality, it is an industry very much supported by the government, they feed off of each other so side A can make money and side B can rely on side A when it needs to hide the truth or abuses towards people. A(entretainment industry) B (Government).

Can you tell me about Aqui Conmigo please? It may not be your most initially striking song but I think it has hidden depths and something very special about it.

I think all my songs are striking in their own way. There is no way I was gonna make an album with 8 Mueves in it. Aqui Conmigo means here with me. It is a song about wanting to be with your best friend whom you've never met before.

I dedicated that song to Atonio Jimenez. Who I love like a brother. Aqui Conmigo grew and now it is a hymn of fraternal love and resistance and struggle within ourselves to stop caring about what others think of us and vice versa. The track is strong, it helps emotions wake up and shake us up a little-That is what I think it is. But if you feel differently about it, then, that's what the song is about, whatever my song makes you feel, then that is what the songs is about..

Big difference between the early versions of Mueve and La Rata to the Color versions, do you feel you went through a big musical growth curve in that time?

Well, we just realised the songs needed to be stronger. The songs were not finished, people really liked them, but, you know, we are never happy until we are able to show our total potential. We are both perfectionists, Michael probably more than me, he makes me sing stuff like 50 times if necessary. It is great to have someone like that by your side, and sometimes I don't realise I can be as good as he pushes me to be. So, with our songs, we did the same and gave them the finishing touches. Especially if we are going to promote ourselves and our music, it better be something of high quality for us to be happy with it.

How long has Mueve been around (song is streamed at the end of this post btw), and what it it about, it feels like that song has been the vehicle for so many people picking up on you?

Mueve I wrote when I was 19. Alongside Walter Hernandez from Colombian export band Systema Solar. We sampled a track from The Beta Band and started freestyling on top of the track and wrote the lyrics together, he did the intro and then I kept going. Last year I decided to take it out of the treasure chest and with Michael’s help changed the arrangements and played it with actual instruments and transformed it to what it is now. The song is all around positive and the brass is too uplifting! Of course people are gonna pick up on me as soon as they hear that song-You cant say no to love.

I don't know about you but I often feel I am drowning in new music, how do you intend to allow yours to stand out amongst the crowd?

Be myself, as cheesy at it sounds. Be true to myself and respect those around me and share and collaborate with more people. Be open to new music and learn from as many musicians and experiences as I can. Stay true to myself, and the moment I don't feel something is right then I am done. I move on.

How come you ended up living in Canada?

I had no choice, my friend. I was 19, and with no independence or power to say “I am staying in Colombia”. It was my time to come. Mother had been living here prior to me for about 5 years. She left when I was 14, so I kinda stumbled against the world learning about life by myself and about being a woman I guess.

Which is great when you want to raise a family, but dreadful when you are a creative type. I used to live in Toronto,for a year I went to school there but decided to move back to London to be closer to my family. I am determined on having more shows and touring more so I need my mom and siblings so they can help me with my son when we leave to play concerts. My current plans are to move to Montreal, around this same time next year. I need my son to get a little older, so I can be confident things will work out there for us.

Can you tell us about your other creative activities? There's a good deal more to you than just music.

I am currently attending University to hopefully one day be a successful Art critic and curator. I am a visual artist. I illustrate and make books and sew. I am a mom which can be very creative at times. I design toys and do print making. Art is my loyal friend, saved me from going crazy.

Lido Pimienta - Interview transcript Part One

Hokay I've been waiting to post this for a good, long minute but the feature is out in Real Groove now - so here's the first chunk of the full transcript, and it's a scorcher. This was all done by email (and thank goodness for that, it would have rivaled the mental 75 minute conversation I had with Lloyd Miller which was like an epic transcription Lord Of The Rings with all the trimmings) and I've got to say huge thanks to Lido for being so generous with her time, and answering all my fairly standard questions in such a spectacularly full and non-standard way.

There's a lot more to come, so I have made this post a more introductory affair with part deux going more into depth on the music, roughly kinda ish. Do please read on...

How (and when) did you begin making music?

I started singing at a very young age. My father used to make me and my sister put on shows for him and my mom, and we would sing Abba songs as well as songs by the Spanish Diva Paloma San Basilio. I started making music in my early teen years with various local bands in my native city Barranquilla. I was 11 when I stepped on stage for the first time. Have kept at it ever since.

What are your influences (is that Joy Division on 'Progreso'?) and could you perhaps name a few contemporary acts that you feel an affinity with please?

Yes, Joy Division is mashed in there! Actually two Joy Division tracks are mashed together in the song. My influences are many, from political abuse to gay rights-From visual arts to motherhood.

Musically I feel there is a division from Lido Pimienta living in Colombia, and Lido Pimienta living in Canada. I grew up bilingual, and when I was 11 I liked bands like Massive Attack and Portishead, you know, all of the Bristol scene. I used to listen to Radiohead and Bjork, and I also really enjoyed everything released by Ninja Tune - especially Dj Shadow and Kid Koala. From North America, I used to listen to Lauryn Hill, the Fugees, and Fear Factory. At this time I was maybe 13 and started to sing in hardcore bands, metal and later Hip Hop. From Latin America I listened to Cafe Tacuba, Julieta Venegas, Los Tres, Lucibel, Plastilina Mosh, Los Prisioneros, Lucybell, Ely Guerra, and Control Machete.

It is fun to remember this era of my life and at the same time sad because when I turned 14 my mother left the country and I had to change my life completely, moving in with relatives who lived far from my home-town. But it was because of this change that I started appreciating Colombian folk. When I moved in with my relatives, my cousins and new friends, they did not like ANY of my music, I mean, they used to call it music for crying hahahaha-They introduced me to music I grew up listening to but took for granted: names like Diomedez Diaz and Los Betos. I learned to like it, and dance to it, and learned about love and break-ups, and feeling things from the perspective of my own people. Which at that point in my life I learned from Thom Yorke, you know what I mean? This period of my life was key for me to define my identity, to understand where I come from, and the historical weight Colombia has in the world. My cousin introduced me to what I consider the most important music of my life: Tambora, Bullerengue and Sexteto. It is music rooted in the north coast of Colombia, music created in towns located right by the Magdanela River in the Atlantic. Later I discovered music form the Pacific. Afro-Colombian sound.

My biggest influences now, I would say are Etelvina Maldonado, Petrona Martinez and El Sexteto Tabala. This is the music I listen to daily, when I wake up and when I go to sleep.

I pretty much stopped listening to bands I used to like when I was 14 - You know, I live in a wealthy country now and I understand where their depression comes from, where their collective feelings are rooted and I am not interested. Not anymore. I got bored listening to Beth Gibbons cry about her break-ups. Being sad in a world so complicated is not what I am about or interested in hearing anymore. Don't get me wrong, she is genius and her voice is like a dream come true. But her message is over rated for me.

I guess you are loosely aligned with the new cumbia 'scene' led by ZZK etc do you feel that affinity?

Yeah, I am definitely connected with that crew, on a personal and musical level. Although I don't feel they lead a new cumbia scene, I think they are strong representatives of this movement, and that what they do is not just new cumbia. They are a very versatile audio visual collective. They embody what I was telling you about making music for the world- it is very exciting. I feel there is a strong connection and recognition of our roots, our music, I guess it has to do with what I was telling you earlier about wanting to know where you are from and ultimately realizing that we are all influenced by life and that as Latin Americans, we are more open minded and receptive towards musics spoken in a different language. We have been doing it for a long time now, and thanks to globalization, English speaking countries or developed countries, whatever you want to call it, are catching on and are starting to be influenced by us...well, I feel they have always been influenced by us, but not as openly as now. So what people like ZZK, Uproot Andy, El Hijo de la Cumbia and Antonio Jimenez are doing is basically a response to a world phenomenon. It is a gesture of reciprocity in which the south of America mixes what happens in the north of America , and Africa and Europe and these places are mixing what happens in our side of the pond. It's a beautiful thing.

You have an interesting name, is there a story behind that?

Yes, my name is awesome!

Lido=Dad named me that way because of some rich man named Lido back in the day who owned car franchises etc. Mum says that when dad saw me he said “She is going to be rich and famous,her name is Lido”

Maria=All of my aunties and gramma are named Maria. It’s the Virgin’s name, my family is extremely religious on my mother’s side-They are indigenous and Maria is an important name our an indigenous matriarch family

Pimienta=My fathers last name. His name comes from Jewish Portuguese who emigrated to Colombia and settled there and had babies with Colombians, One of those babies was my father who had me with my mom who is a...

Paz=One of the most important and historical Indigenous families of Colombia. My family on my mom’s side is Wayuu. We live in the deserts of Colombia in the north coast, and some of my aunties cannot even speak Spanish. They live in a sort of magical land, which of course the government is turning into a nightmare. We get no respect, especially when being the one indigenous community in Colombia who stood up to and won against the Spanish when they wanted to colonize us and steal our land...

There you go, my complete Colombian name. In Canada my name is Lido Pimienta, but in Colombia my complete name is Lido Maria Pimienta Paz. My name says everything about who I am.

Well, I am still not rich though, I am poor as hell...lets hope that changes soon!

You and your geezer make all your beats right? What is his musical background and how does that work out as a collaborative process?

Michael Ramey is my music angel. He is very talented. We met about 4 years ago when he hired me to do the art for his album called Ephemera Blues. His solo project is called Golden Death Music. He is actually releasing a new album on which I am helping him with the art again.

At times we disagree on sounds and we walk through it all and end up with what we end up. I start with an idea and then he will follow me or he will have a part ready for me and I follow.

He is a versatile musician who plays various instruments, and the ones he can’t really play, somehow he still manages to make them sound beautiful.

His background is well...white? He is originally from Columbus Ohio in the USA, and his mother’s side is Japanese. He was raised by his mom, from whom I know he got the creative vein. He mainly listens to old psychedelic rock from all over the world, he loves Acid Mothers Temple for example, but also loves stuff like Okay (Marty Anderson) and adores Rythym and Blues - the real deal though-He opened up a whole new world of music to me, and I did the same for him, which is why our music sounds so rich and global when we do it together. I certainly know that the best things come out of collaboration and the integration of different points of view.
