Upstairs At The Ritzy was VIP business, intimate but rocking, the combination of Bank Holiday, Reading and Leeds...let alone the summoning up of powers for Carnivalistic delight and crowdcrushery, always meant this would be one for the heads...but we did have a few bodies through by the end of the night too. Top notch, even if I did have to resort to a frikkin iPod when 'puter dramas made a spicy start to the night. Just as well I did dash to Soho for necessary vinylisation this morning....... and picked up some scorchers!!!
Talking of Carnival, I've been meaning to give a plugotito to Heatwave's Sunday night after shindig when they go toe to toe with LostBahnhoff. The promotionally savvy Gabriel was keen for me to post a track with this flyer featuring their erstwhile MC Rubi Dan getting a a bit house and garden on it. To be honest the track wasn't really in my metaphorical olfactory yard and plenty more efficient bloggers than I have answered Gabriel's klaxon call and posted it already....some time ago...come on, I've had an ocean or two to cross and a hemisphere to straddle.
So flyer below for what should be a monstrous evening (Heatwave are on early....it's the new black) and check the track elsewhere if you fancy a bit of doofery. We're really hoping to make it but it may possibly be a tall order after consecutive gigging nights, a day of Carnival with the fam and a foolish and reprehensible journey down south in the morning (which is frankly far closer than is polite right now, in time and space terms) in search of 2nd hand goodness.
It's obviously late...and I'm obviously rambling, so lets wrap this up before I take someone's eye out..most likely my own.

Righto, couple of gigs very much on the horizon for all In-gland dwellers and London larrikins, in fact it's next week. This trip has seemed to come about with remarkable speed and I can forsee little sleep and riddiculous industry between now and the shitey flighty.
First up is an engagement near my old stomping ground of Stockwell, on Friday the 28th. The venue is Upstairs At The Ritzy, above the Ritzy cinema (funnily enough) on Coldharbour Lane, Brixton Oval. The guff is all below but briefly, gates at 6, I'll be spinning from 8.45 for a good spell - and it looks like a noice and decent bar for some righteous renkeration, I can hardly wait!! It's a fiver for all and sundry, or four for benefitos and concessionary types... can't say fairer than that. South styles in effect, so I'm expecting to be digging deep on the JA and related tip, but naturally exhibiting typical audiophonic ADD activity and genre gerrymandering of a most despicable and olfactory nature all the while.
The following night Saturday the 30th it's all on at the Vibe Bar in Brick Lane, Tower Hamlets for NZLDN, an entire night aimed at eradicating vowels violently in some kind of hand-across-the-hemisphere syntaxical showdown. Well it's a koiwi gig, and in all honesty outside of Mz Coddington and the D's (Mikki and Nick(y)) I'm not familiar with the rest of, what appears to be, a wide swathe of the musical spectrum. So a bit of interest on the night there. The early talk was of an outside set from 5-6 and then indoors and downstairs from 7 till 10 but I'm not 100% on that so I'll update, as and when I know fer sure. It all kicks off at 1pm, and it's free...free i tells ya - before 8pm, four squiddly rankings afterwards. I have a feeling this will be one of those see what you play on the night scenarios, I've always had a gas playing at Spacific events and suspect scorcheration is on the cards.

Last show for a month - so tonight had to count, and I think it did. Great to be able to play the Kidz In Space gear before I head off ... and so much other goodness. Mary Anne Hobb's has dished out the damage on 'Wild Angels' and Big Dada seem to be on somewhat of a roll with the Anti-Pop Consortium album (which is demanding some headphone attention) and the awfully nice and decent Midlands man Juice Aleem.
However a treat instead in the shape of Wooden Shjips cover of Serge & Briggite Bardot's 'Contact' on the Mexican Summer label. It's 8 minutes of groove heavy, electrifying covers business that you can sadly no longer score from the store - and it wasn't easy or cheap to do that when you could a few months ago. Worth every penny.. and more, this is the kind of record I will never be able to resist, even as I sink further into the inevitable world of hitting the digital sections of the music vendors and Traktor totality. You can probably blame the Traktor fascination for the lack of posts over the last month or two, sussing the capabilities and getting my music files regimented and increased has been occupying a good chunk of my spare time. I'm looking forward to the fruits of that next Friday the 28th at Upstairs At The Ritzy on Coldharbour Lane, Brixton and at the Vibe Bar, Brick Lane the following night on koiwi tip with Anna Coddington, Miki D, Nick D (Clash of the D's perhaps) et al. Soooo, our good friend of the label and all round exceedingly good bloke, bFM colleague for a fair chunk of time and what have you - Sean Grattan is about to head off to some fancy Californininayan film school where they probably have Wooden Shjips gigs..like every day.. at recess man.
Sean has done some downright stunning and also severely not in-here (as in out-there) videos for us. It began with wrestlers at the beach bizarreness for SJD's 'Black Is A Beautiful Colour', I defy anyone to crack at least a sizable grin at this one and there's so many brilliant touches, edits and all important little things.
Then he went on to make a rapid turnaround, RTMstyle, clippy EPK (almost can't type that term it's like cdingle, just wrong) type thingummyjig for SJD's 'Dayglo Spectres' album.
Most recently he took his camera phone and a budget that is wayyyy smaller than catering alone on most jobs and just flumed the fark out on James Duncan's 'My New Flumes' with the delightful Bacheloretti.

With his flatmate James of all Duncan, Mr Grattan makes up R.A.D.S.Y.S.T.E.M. They are not afraid to plummet the very bottom of the taste barrel or brack out the tambourine to get the party started .... possibly not started right.. but definitely started. They are..

But all those quaint notions are gone, I have been tainted by strange images that have emerged from R.A.D.S.Y.S.T.E.M.-osphere. Whether or not this has any connection to a suggestion from the RTM Marketing Think/StinkTank that a celeb sex tape would be an excellent marketing tool (ooh err) to raise James Duncan's profile (I'll stop) and get them copies of 'Hello-Fi' ringing the tills like there's no tomorrow.. well I don't know. It's just quite scary and concerning in so many ways.

Hokay this was the penultimate show for a wee while, I shall be driving the stenching grooves next Tuesday and then will be peesing orf for four whole shows which will be taken care of by the safe hands of Gin. Actually realising that there was only one more show after tonight for a wee while was a bit of a shock when it dawned on me yesterday, and despite mainly spending my day dealing with fuckery of various sorts, instead of getting knee deep in piles of files and downright dirty with the discs, tonight's show felt like it hung right (rather than to the right).
Hanyways will post news of a couple of northern hemispherical gigs up here in the next few days and expect me to be blowing my whistle at Carnival like a man possessed (does one still do that? am I truly out of step? is it strictly daggering and waving your weapon these days??).
So back with the show, sterling local contributions from Frosty (whose track enchanted me amongst so much mediocrity going through stuff this afternoon, even better I didn't know it was his till I HAD to check where the track came from - blind listening, a rare advantage to shabby file labeling!), as well as Scotty/Make Do and of course the RTM brigade (Messrs Duncan, Belt, Langeveld and Pinckney). Domesticology with no apology forthcoming or required... there! Loads of other goodness and I only got to play a couple from Zomby's new EP which is unbloodybelievable, and that Queen Ifrica tune is murderous and ... and I could go on.
This week I'm posting a treat, can't tell you much about the artist other than what I've gleaned from a quick scoot around the usual suspects. Christophe is described in the sleevenotes to the fantastically brilliantine 'Dirty French Psychedelics' as a 'master singer', and if that's what the Dirty lads of Paris say then I'll have to concur. He has a mighty track record (this cut is from 1970) and is still gigging today, not bad when it looks like he may be partial to the odd glass of red wine, a packet of Gaulloise and who knows what else too, so respect! He is also responsible for the first track on the comp which is a scorcher too, though very different. In all honesty there isn't a cut on this crucial compile that doesn't flick my settings to the 'le sizzle' mode, it's already made a sizable dent in the listening time at the stately stinky manor. Apparently he's also recently worked with Alan Vega, I can feel a mini-obsession emerging, watch this space kinda.
Thanks to the beneficial bountitude of my spar in music hunting up north (no not 'that' up north) I now have the vinyl and CD of 'Dirty French Psychedelics' and, completely out of character I'd recommend the digital disc. Not sure I could live without the wax now but the disc sounds magnificent and side-length of the vinyl version makes for a bit of a quiet and slightly compromised pressing. Having said that, aside from searching for somewhere to legally DL the tracks, I was not complaining with the voinyl versh I copped a month or two ago, just wary that I wouldn't play it out if there wasnt ample headroom etc. Blah blah... it's late, the track (192 kbps, trust me CDQ is the only way to go, this is a taste) and all the links a man, woman, child or music-seeking mollusc could possibly wish for are below (or a click away if you're on yer aahessess groind)

We have told tales on Zombybefore, so there's nae need for a full fandangle... but this new 2x12" on Ramp is as undead as they come - in fact it's completely alive with creeping squelches, angular blips and totally, totally gone rhythms. Loving it to pieces, except every track feels shorter than it need be, I'll stop moaning about with these wonkanauts once they start to fully resolve their bleepscapes for longer than a couple of minutes, three at a stretch.

As I type there's a bunch of stuff occurring to me that I probably should be doing, so I'd best get on with it. This track from Jamie Vex'd is stupendous - buildings fall, souls are squeezed and dibby dibby wobble-eds shrivel up into expired epidermal excrement..each and every time you hear it. So basically what I'm saying is that it's as good as 'Crusher Dub', and then some. There's a lighter touch to the irrepressibly warped Vex'd flavours but the menace is just better slightly camouflaged, not absent. It's late and I'll probably start ranting on like a buffoon about the treacle toned beats and massive mournful horns - or why there aren't more records like this, and so many that just sound the same. see, there you go. It begins and now it must finish. Listen to this 192-fi file, become entranced, disgusted, delighted.. whatever it takes - and then tootle off to secure a copy of some sort. The other tracks are ridonkulous too, I can't believe I slept on this when it came out in April, major malfunction.

Hmmm tough to know what tune to run for you blog-ees this week, a lorra Luke Vibert this week so I guess we'll go with the hirsute geez-us who looks like Jeez-us (or the stereotypical white feller with a grande beard version, though I suspect Mr Vibert's serene vibes may be the subject of herbal assistance...) Tunewise I'd like to hip you to the 'Bakwey' rhythm from the glorious locals High Stakes. There's a whole interview malarkey with Simon & Tiopira on stinkyincy already, so I'll keep this succinct, basically they've come back with another belter. I hope there's some more vocals planned for this - and maybe some from closer to home, the MCs on this one haven't knocked my proverbial socks off ... yet (since this morning!) - though that is par for the course with the bulk of current voxalisers to be fair.
Hanyways I reckon this rhythm is tight, and definitely up to scratch with what's coming out of elsewhere at the mo, so titfers aloft for the HS fellerses.

This week we have an album going into the production cycle (James Duncan's stupendous 'Hello-Fi' out August 3d, start saving your pennies), two 7"s about to start their trek from files to piles (of wax) that would be Jefferson Belt and Unitone HiFi tussling it out on the split-ness and Mr Duncan with yet more scorchment, as well as new songs, promised demos and all sorts else. Throw in a fair swag of journalistic blabbering and the delightful distraction of a new toy for digital deckery, that mighty Kode 9 gig and a raft of other stuff.... and its been full on.
Not too full on to sling a tune your way and promise a post for later this week (I have given you a starter and a main course but the desert has been a tad tardulatory) though. Making a big impression on tonight's somewhat rocksmik show was the 'Milky Disco 2' comp, a recent gift from my #1 NYC connect and one that's taken a minute to sus out. There's some amazing stuff on there alongside a little tosh that is basically trip-hop dressed up in rather un-fetching balearic booties. Focussing on the finery, I've been somewhat taken with Polyester and their 80's-esque cut which closed out on tonights show. On first listen I dismissed this as yet more revisionist racket trying to conjure up some mythical atmosphere of 25+ years ago, yet it has crept up on me and dissolved my cynicism. I'm sure I've heard of (and maybe seen a picture of) Polyester on some blog somewhere but my google game must be off because my internetted sleuthery has revealed many Polyesters ( a garage rock band from Argentina, an indie mob from Uruguay etc) but not the one I'm looking for. Scratch that, an extra L, Doh! myspace below, not sure about their other gear but this track is the veritable biz.There's a whole host of other good stuff on Milky Disco 2, too many to mention here though I suspect tracks will be turning up on SG for some time to come. Have a taste... and then put yer hand in yer pocket and deal with the meal.

Shows like tonights, where there is a frankly greedy amount of excess brilliant tunage can be hit and miss, tonight's felt on target though it was a cram jam to get as many tunes in as possible. The last week has been a series of harvest festival type pick-ups from the PO Box and joyous packages appearing on the doorstep, and I have a feeling I haven't started to scrape the surface with a lot of the goodness. Gear like the floatatious new double-disc-delight 'Milky Disco 2' (chars KH) on Lo Recordings, and Smalltown Supersound's pleasingly bent latest label comp 'On Fire' (likewise GG), the two new'uns on a revived On-U Sound and others take a few listens and some proper absorption type business.
That's not even starting on the wax ranging from the blisterating new Wooden Shjips cover of Serge and Bridget's 'Contact', Dirty Soundsystems outrageously outstanding 'Dirty French Psychedelics' (we'll have to be posting on that at a later date but it's well limited so I wouldn't advise hanging around if you want to own it...and believe me you do) new cumbia biz from Fauna and Toy Selectah, right through to the soiled magnificence of a new Bot'ox vinyl injection, and both Sonic Boom and Depth Charge ruffling that delightful chap Tim 'Love' Lee's tailfeathers in a remix speed date gone horribly right. Maybe you can tell, I'm well excited about the latest ear wax.
When things calm down a fraction I'll get round to digitising some of those monstrous musical morsels, but tonight I have had to take my eyes off all that beaty bounty and be content with digital droppings. This is a right ripper though from Dutch cumbia convert (and converter himself it would have to be said) Sonido Del Principe, a feller called Vince from Noord-Brabant.
Having already had tracks on the two most prominent and discerning labels for South Amercian/Argentinian flavoured multi-stripe nuevo goodness, ZZK and Bersa Discos, his estrella is undoubtedly on the rise. He also runs the excellent and fast-moving Generation Bass blog which covers a great deal more than just cumbia, and is a definite needer for the RSS reader.
While some of his tackle is a bit too wavy-ravey-gravy for my highly pernickety tatstes when it isn't - it's mighty good. I thought I never wanted to hear another re-lick, blend, mash-up or close relative of Coki & Benga's 'Night' again, even the most inspired (and we're talking a couple really) failed to match the pure, undiluted (though now tarnished by overfamiliarity) brilliance of the original. This version, which I've played a few times on the show over the last couple of months, is something else entirely and I rate it the uppermost. There's a 320 of this about for those who love their ears but we only do 192 here, because the end result should be investing in the music and supporting the labels and artists - though in this case it's unbuyable so my goal shall be your investigation to track down the high quality files and the tonal tangents that may take you on.
